Why We Love MODX
There are over 1 billion websites on the World Wide Web, and each one contains content that needs to be managed in some way. There are many services, systems, frameworks, and languages that developers use to build these websites, each with its own pros and cons. At TopSpot, our favorite way to develop websites for our clients is via a platform called MODX.
What is MODX?
MODX is an open-source content management system (CMS) and web application framework. MODX helps developers to create websites that are easily editable by absolutely anyone. It is highly customizable, flexible, and built with security and scalability in mind.
Unfamiliar with MODX? Here’s a Quick Overview:
TopSpot’s Development Team has collectively worked with a wide variety of CMSs over the years. Some are quite popular and are based on the same programming language (PHP) with similar ways of managing content.
So why do we love MODX the most for our Clients? Allow us to count the ways for you:
1) Administrative Flexibility
For one, the administrative dashboard of MODX where you manage your pages and content is by default well-organized, intuitive, and user-friendly. As soon as you log in, you immediately see all of your pages in a hierarchical list. The list allows you to drag-and-drop to quickly restructure page order on the fly.
Right-clicking allows you to perform quick actions like page duplication. There is no need to spend time digging through settings, options, and files to figure out how to do something like adjusting your website’s main menus.
Additionally, left-clicking on a page in the list will allow you to adjust your page content and layouts using drag-and-drop fields and templates set up specifically for your site’s theme design.
Like everything else in MODX, these can be completely customized with settings and options to match your content and any unique needs it may have. The dashboard in general can be further modified to show only what you want to see. If you want a user that can only edit your blog or a group of users that can only view certain pages, we can easily fine-tune views and permissions to make that happen.
2) Less Reliance on Plugins
Another reason why MODX is a great choice is that it is not reliant on or restricted by plugins. Plugins allow people to add website features at the click of a button – a developer has already built the feature so you don’t have to. This is extremely convenient, but not all plugins are created equal.
MODX has plugins available because they are quite useful, but they aren’t required and the ones most commonly used are well-maintained, flexible, and built in ways that give developers complete control over almost every feature they provide. Because of this, we are able to customize MODX sites from the ground up to fit exactly what you need.
3) Security and Stability
Lastly, we love MODX because of its security and stability. While it is best to ensure all websites stay up-to-date regardless of how they’re built, MODX’s innate security measures along with lack of reliance on questionable plugins make it a breeze to maintain long-term without worry.
